Once upon a time their lived two children. Both loved to play and run. The older taking care of her younger sister knew that she had to be the strong one even with one eye.

Their mother unknown, they were given names by those who looked after them and all the other children with no home. The younger one was named Shadow for always hiding behind her sister. While the older Jacquelyn, was named after one of the nuns who passed not to long before her birth.

No one really know how Jacquelyn lost her. She would never say. But she was still a child and why would the loss of one thing matter when there were pies to eat and games to win. In her wake lay little Shadow. Scared of the older children and the caretakers but ever kind and loving.

Nine long years they played with the children in the yard of the church pretending to be great adventures. Then running in for food when the bell would ring. All eating together, telling stories, arguing who is the strongest, and in some case listening to the children who were returned.

These stories always sadden Shadow, while making Jacquelyn furies and distrustful of adults. She would think on the ones who the priest and nuns would bring in. More than not, they were hurt, afraid, and so hungry it must have hurt. It would be even worse when an adventure would bring them in. These were the one with nightmares that would wake screaming. Watching the horrors they saw all over again.

One day things changed for them. Two adventures came early in the morning just before everyone woke up. They talked to the priest about the children, about those who are hurt, those who just arrived, and those who have been there since birth like the two of them. Every curious the two would watched on until a nun caught them and ran them outside to play.

The two adventures stayed for most of the day. The dwarf fixing parts of the old church, while the elf helped cook and in one case casting a spell to play with the children. It created butterflies that would fly around and if anyone would catch one they would pop and even more would come out.

As they watched the children the girls watch them. Shadow not able to take her eyes off the dwarf after he cut a tree down in a single hit. While Jacquelyn fallows the mage around. Race doesn’t matter but she know more mages were evil and used children as sacrifices or experiments then those who do good.

When it got close to supper time they left. They didn’t take anyone in fact the mage gave everyone a piece of candy while the dwarf said his good byes. When the mage got to her and her sister she took a quick look and made sure no one was watching. Then she stuck her hands out to them giving them each two pieces. With a smile she pats their heads telling them good job at watching her and her friend.

With that they live. Ever confused they eat one piece each saving the second for later. Both pieces there favorites. Orange for Jacquelyn and raspberry for Shadow. It was like she know the perfect flavor for each.Their mother unknown, they were given names by those who looked after them and all the other children with no home.
